ELLA - Sri lanka

Sri Lanka is liberally endowed with beautiful views, and Ella has one of the best. The sleepy village is nestled in a valley peering straight through Ella Gap to the plain nearly 1000m below, and across to the coast where, on a clear night, you can see the Great Basses lighthouse. And as if the views weren’t enough, Ella is surrounded by hills perfect for walks through tea plantations to temples and waterfalls. Ella only received electricity in 1984.

Most visitors to Ella only spend a couple of days there. But if you are willing to travel out of town, you can find plenty of things to do to keep you occupied. Like most places in Sri Lanka, the people here earn their money from tourism. The nice thing about Ella is that there doesn’t seem to be anyone trying to con you or rip you off, which makes for a nice laid back, relaxing stay.

The other nice thing about Ella is the climate. It reminds me of a hot English summer. Hot during the day and nice and cool at night. If you fancy climbing the peaks that are dotted around Ella, then make sure you take sun protection and water!
